This gorgeous session at Hangar 51 in Olympia, Washington felt like the perfect example of what to wear to your engagement photoshoot! This is one of the most common questions I get from my couples and I don’t want this decision to be stressful. Your engagement session is a chance for us to document this beautiful season of life!

In May 2021, Ryane & James won a giveaway I did for an engagement session! They’ve been together for 10 years and their wedding was set for March 2020 in Maui, Hawaii. Like everyone’s plans for 2020, that didn’t work out!!
Their new wedding date was in August 2021 (congrats you two!!) and since there were still restrictions in place, they planned a beautiful wedding in their backyard that overlooks the Puget Sound.
This couple was PERFECT for this engagement shoot location – they both have a passion for aviation! And since their original wedding plans got cancelled, the travel theme was a nod to their dream of having a destination wedding.
Ryane got her hair and makeup done by Glam to Go Girls and WOW doesn’t she look amazing???

Fun fact about me: The Olympia airport has a special place in my heart! My dad and grandpa are both small plane, private pilots. I’ve had a lot of fun family memories here and I always love sharing that with my clients!!

What to Wear For Engagement Photos
Ryane is a great example of what to wear in your engagement photos!! Both of the outfits she wore showed her personality and helped her look stunning. She wore a dress for the first half and then a jumper for the second half.
My number one tip will always be to wear what makes you feel comfortable & confident!! But for more specific tips on picking an outfit for your shoot, here ya go.
- Don’t mix & match patterns
If one partner wears a pattern like stripes, dots, floral, or plaid, then the other partner should wear a solid so there’s no clashing! This can lead to the photos looking messy or too busy and ultimately taking away from your beautiful faces.
- Layer up!
Layers are the best for any photoshoot! If you get warm, just shed a scarf or a cardigan. This adds some diversity to your gallery and helps you stay comfortable. Plus some clothing can be used as a prop to add movement – I can direct you to adjust your scarf, or play with the brim of your hat.
Ryane’s jean jacket over her white dress is the perfect example of how layering adds SO much to your pics! Don’t you just love that fringe? I’m obsessed.
- Consider your colors
Sometimes it helps to choose your colors based on your photoshoot location! If we’re outside in the winter, bold or bright colors will pop against the snow while darker neutrals provide a more subtle vibe. It all depends on what your vision is!!
I love how Ryane & James went with the classic white and black outfits. I think a cute white outfit is always perfect for the bride to be!
With neutrals of white, black, denim, and grey, Ryane’s red lip was a perfect pop of color. Their neutral outfits balanced out the yellow plane and gorgeous bright blue sky.
- Dress up & dress down!
I LOVE recommending something dressier for part of the session and something casual for the other half. Typically we can get more candid, authentic shots in casual wear. But why not take the chance to go all out and get fancy?? Better yet – why not BOTH?
- Think about the weather
Weather can be a litttttle bit crazy here in Washington, so make sure you check the weather the week of your engagement session! Overall, try to dress for the season so you can be as comfortable as possible. You shouldn’t wear a summer dress for a winter snow session, and you shouldn’t wear boots and a scarf for a session in July.
